‘The strongest girls in the room are often the most at risk.’

Some of our greatest strengths as athletes can also become risk factors. ✨

That’s why it’s so important for all of us to recognize the red flags in female athlete health and performance, understand the difference between what’s common and what’s actually normal, and truly get to know our own bodies!

In our latest HER Huddle workshop, @nutritionbymel breaks down what a healthy cycle actually looks like, why missing periods are red flags (not badges of honor), what signs we might notice and can address so we don’t skip a period, and how fueling, training load, and hormones are all connected!

If you’re an athlete, parent, or coach…this is a conversation you can’t afford to miss!

If you’re a female athlete- or you care for one - understanding period health and female physiology isn’t “extra.”

It’s basic care.

It’s how we show respect, support, and responsibility to the girls and women in our lives! 🎤

And when the people around female athletes understand this too?
That’s where real change happens!!

The menstrual cycle is more than just a period - it’s a powerful health and performance signal! 💥

In this session, sports dietitian and women’s health expert, Melanie Sulaver, helps athletes, coaches, and anyone supporting female athletes better understand the menstrual cycle and how it can affect each athlete differently. Because no two athletes experience their cycle the same way, awareness is key!!!

Mel will help us explore:

• What a healthy menstrual cycle looks like and why it matters for athletes
• Why 44% of adolescent athletes believe losing their period is normal - and why it shouldn’t be
• How the menstrual cycle can influence energy levels, recovery, mood, strength, and performance
• Why missing or irregular cycles are important signals from the body
• How fueling, training load, stress, and sleep interact with hormonal health
• How athletes can track patterns and better understand their own bodies

Instead of ignoring the menstrual cycle or seeing it as a barrier, this conversation helps athletes build awareness and better understand their own unique patterns so they can support both their health and performance!! 👏👏

📅 Workshop: Saturday, March 21
⏰ 12–1 PM EST

The more we understand periods in sport, the more we show female athletes the respect, care, and support they deserve! We’ll see you there! 💜

Join us inside HER Huddle on 3/18 at 7pm EST as Carly Silverstein, LMSW helps athletes Build Their Mental Health Playbook! @carlymax_

Building a Mental Health Playbook is all about learning how to recognize and regulate emotions while creating a personalized plan for navigating life’s challenges. Just like in sport, life comes with wins, losses, pressure, and unexpected moments! 🫶🏼

Having a clear game plan helps us stay grounded and respond with intention instead of reacting in the moment!

In our session, Carly will help athletes focus on building self-awareness- learning to notice what we’re feeling, understanding what might be driving those emotions!

Together, we’ll create a Mental Health Playbook filled with self-care strategies, coping skills, and tools we can turn to when things feel overwhelming.

Life will always be a little unpredictable. But when we have a Mental Health Playbook, we’re better prepared!!

Athletes, round up your teammates!
Coaches, schedule a team meeting!

Female athletes are 4-6 times more likely to tear

Female athletes are 4-6 times more likely to tear their ACL than their male sport-comparable. A large proportion happen in girls and women participating in sports like soccer, basketball, and lacrosse.

Why does this happen?
There are a number of factors, including differences in biomechanics, neuromuscular control, strength patterns, lack of focus on strength training in youth/female athletes, hormonal influences and more!

📣But the most important takeaway is this: MANY ACL INJURIES ARE PREVENTABLE!!!! 📣

And the consequences are real. An ACL injury doesn’t just mean missing a few games. It often means:
- Surgery and 9–12 months of rehab
- Up to 62% drop out of sport w/in 2 years post injury
- Increased risk of future knee injuries and early arthritis
- Mental health challenges

The good news? Injury prevention training works!!!!!

Decades of research show that neuromuscular programs can reduce ACL injuries by up to 50–80% while also improving strength, stability, reducing risk of other injuries and improving overall performance. Win/win!

So how do we implement it with our team?

Our team completes a training program called RIIP Reps at least 4x per week.

- FREE app for apple & android
- Takes about 7 minutes
- Led by an instructor (so we don’t have to, coaches)
- Can easily replace a traditional warm-up

Small investment. HUGE impact

If you lead, coach, parent, support, or work with female athletes, these programs should be a standard part of your training environment. The science behind them is clear and well established.

Let’s all do our part to keep girls and women in sport longer and playing stronger by making ACL injury prevention the norm.

As coaches, we have a responsibility to protect the health and performance of our athletes.

But…
Most of us don’t have formal education in nutrition, strength & conditioning, mental health, or female athlete health, etc!

And here’s the good news:
We don’t have to!!

We don’t need another degree to start making an impact.

We can help our athletes by helping them become more aware.

Aware of:
- How they’re actually feeling
- What’s affecting their energy and performance
- Their thoughts and behaviors
- Their stress levels
- How they recover
- Their menstrual cycles and the patterns they notice
- How they feel before and after practice
- Are they fueling & hydrating enough
- What symptoms keep showing up

We don’t need all the answers.
We just need to ask questions.

Helping athletes understand themselves is one of the most empowering tools we can give them!

And it doesn’t take a degree.
It takes intention.
It takes care.
It takes leadership.

And if you want support - we’ve got you!

If you’re honest… what was your experience like with your own coach(es)?

For many of us, it wasn’t always positive.
Some of us were motivated by fear.
Some of us were praised only for performance.
Some of us learned to stay quiet about injuries, periods, stress, or struggles.

And while those experiences shaped us… they also taught us what NOT to do.

As coaches, we are doing so much more than running drills and calling plays.

We are shaping:
• Confidence
• Body image
• Relationship with food
• Work ethic
• Self-talk
• Leadership
• Boundaries
• Mental resilience
• How girls see themselves - in sport and in life!!!

We are laying foundations for lifelong skills, behaviors, beliefs, and identity.

That’s powerful. And it’s a responsibility.

When we as coaches can combined our own lived experiences with evidence- based knowledge and strategies to support our athletes- we can make an even bigger impact on them now and far in their futures.

Come learn and grow WITH us…together!

Our favorite day of the year- Happy National Girls & Women in Sports Day! 💜

Sport does more than build strength and skill.
It builds confidence. Leadership. Resilience. VOICE!

When girls play, they learn they are capable of anything!
When women compete, they redefine what’s possible.

The impact of sport lasts far beyond the field (court, track, pool, etc) - it shapes how she shows up in the classroom, in her career, in relationships, and in life!

But culture matters.
Health matters.
Support matters.

Join our community and help us change the culture of sport for girls and women - TOGETHER!
